Objectives

The aim of this project is to investigate a suitable design for patients over 65 years and to examine how gamification can be used to enhance and sustain user motivation throughout the training. In addition, the project will demonstrate how such an application can be implemented.

Initial situation

People who have been diagnosed with cancer face major challenges, especially older adults. In addition to dealing with the direct impacts of their illness, they often struggle with other diseases and frequently suffer from mental stress and other psychological issues. It can be difficult to provide personal assistance to these patients, as they are typically limited in mobility, and visiting a psychiatrist or similar professional is not always feasible. This mental stress is often caused by not being able to cope with the situation and a lack of effective communication. Studies have shown that self-reflection and mindfulness training are effective ways to counteract this stress and psychological strain.
A mindfulness-training program has been developed by experts in cancer treatment and psychology, which addresses breast cancer patients that suffer physical impairments and psychological stress.
The training is structured into eight modules. Each module contains a mix of explanations, exercises, practices, or meditation instructions. The training aims not only to inform and educate users about cancer related topics but also to enhance their self-reflection skills through interactive training.

With these key functions as the foundation, an interactive prototype was created that visualizes the user flow in a simple way. A usability test was carried out with this prototype to check user acceptance. The feedback was very positive and served as the basis for the implementation.
