Better Gardens

Summary

Better Garden is an App that aims to bring people together to enhance biodiversity.

Key terms

Programming language: Dart
Database: Firebase
Server: Serverless (Firebase Hosting for Database)
Deployment: Git → Testing → Bitrise → Google Playstore
Operating System: Android and IOS

Project goal

The main goal of our project was to implement a feature that would allow users to create so-called 'Connection Projects' that benefit local biodiversity. A Connection Project is a collaboration of several gardens (several users) intending to benefit a targeted species. A feature that would allow (direct) communication among users was removed from the priorities list.

Initial situation

The initial situation of Better Gardens was an already existing infrastructure with Database and Software Architecture that was handed over to us by last year's IP34/20vt team. The main features implemented would allow users to create so-called 'Gardens' and visualize them on a map. Seeing opportunities for further development of the tool, our client from FIBL requested a second project with the aim of implementing the main feature that would allow users to connect and communicate with each other. During further development of the project, we noticed some malpractices, which led to bugs that had to be fixed first.

Benefits of the solution

The implementation of the feature that would allow users to create Connection Projects allows users to connect and work together to benefit local biodiversity.
Further Benefits:
- Good user experience through an intuitive way of creating Connection Projects
- Easy way to register thanks to multiple methods (Google, Email)
- Connecting people by inspiring them to work together for a species
- Spreading knowledge by providing information about any species and their environment
- Easy and automated deployment thanks to a build pipeline

Results

Once a user has registered a garden they can join or create one or more Connection Projects. Members of a Connection Project can then take their own measures, some of which are suggested by the app, to increase the species' environmental quality. Moreover, a user can easily acquire knowledge in the app about any species. Users that do not yet belong to a Connection Project can visualize and filter all available Connection Projects of a chosen area in the maps and join them. Therefore, the user can actively look for any Connection Project targeting a chosen species. A member of a Connection Project is now able to also manage the Connection Project. This means adjusting the title and description of the Connection Project and also seeing all participants.
