Epic Explore - Design and Implementation of Geospatial AR for a Map-based App

Discover Zürich's unrealized architecture through immersive Augmented Reality. Epic Explore brings urban history to life using geospatial AR storytelling and interactive exploration at Bürkliplatz.

Text

Initial situation

Many cities are shaped by the past, but their unrealized architectural visions remain invisible to the public. Bürkliplatz in Zürich was the subject of a major architectural competition in 1926, but the proposed designs were never built. Epic Explore aims to make these hidden histories visible through AR storytelling.

Project goal

The goal of this project was to design and develop an AR feature that enhances cultural learning by letting users explore historical architecture proposals in their original context. The app was built to allow integration into the existing Flutter-based MapUncover platform and was evaluated in a real-world setting.

Solution developed and its benefits

Epic Explore is an iOS AR app using RealityKit, ARKit, and Google’s Geospatial API. It lets users explore alternative visions for Bürkliplatz through 3D overlays. Guided by a virtual character named Hans Ueli, users are led through a site-specific experience and reflect via an integrated Connections-style quiz. The project demonstrates how AR can enhance situated learning and cultural engagement.
