Energy Simulation & Visualization
Development of an interactive prototype for stabilizing power grids using Merit Order logic and real-time data analysis.
Initial situation
The integration of volatile renewable energies such as solar and wind power poses major challenges for grid stability. Since power grids require a constant balance between generation and consumption, forecast deviations lead to risky imbalances. Currently, there is a lack of transparent tools to simulate and control the interaction of flexible consumers and storage systems in an understandable way in real time.
Problem statement / Project goal
Within the scope of this project, a system was developed in collaboration with CEEX that compares simulated energy production with consumption forecasts. The goal was to implement a priority-based decision logic (Merit Order) that automatically triggers corrective measures in the event of deviations. A central visualization component makes these complex energy flows and decision-making processes transparent and understandable for stakeholders.
Solution developed and its benefits
The project resulted in a functional prototype that visualizes energy balances and responds dynamically to fluctuations. By connecting to publicly available data (Swissgrid), realistic scenarios could be created. The system features include:
- Interactive Visualization: 3D and 2D Merit Order diagrams to represent costs and reaction times.
- Priority Logic: Automated balancing of grid imbalances through intelligent control of flexible loads.
- Detailed Analysis: Device-specific views for resources such as heat pumps.
- Decision Transparency: Clear representation of why specific resources were activated at any given time.
While the focus was on simulation, the prototype impressively demonstrates the potential of flexible energy management strategies.
