Remote assistance on the move

Zusammenfassung

Navigation of maintenance work using Hololens and remote assistance/p>

Schlüsselbegriffe

Zielsetzung

The aim is to use new technologies such as Hololens 2 and Unity to accelerate the maintenance work on trains in the service stations. New insights into the combination of digital twins as well as design principles of mixed reality applications are to be investigated and gained.

Ausgangslage

SBB carries out maintenance on passenger trains in a time window of 8 hours. These employees are under great time pressure to repair as many objects as possible.

Ergebnisse

In its current state, Mixed Reality technology is still fairly limited. The small Field of View greatly limits the amount of information that can be displayed at once. The object tracking however works surprisingly well. A digital object placed in the real world is under the right circumstances almost indistinguishable from a real object. Before the device can be used for more than just simple tasks, some major improvements are still needed. Using digital twins to supply additional information to the HoloLens and - in extension - to the user could definitely have its advantages. However, as mentioned already, the headset is limited in how much information it can display. Because of that, adding more information would require more complex controls for the user, and thus more training. In the tests, neither the line, nor the arrow came out superior. Both versions had their advantages and their drawbacks. The line generally seems to work better if the target is relatively far away as a far away target is very like to be in the user’s field of view. In that case the arrow would just disappear and the transparent cube may not be visible enough. The line however works really well in that case as it always shows the user the exact location of their current target. The arrow on the other hand seems to be more intuitive for most users.
