The FHNW is currently developing a digital twin of the soon-to-be completed Square Kilometre Array (SKA). The SKA will be the largest radio telescope, able to capture the sky at an unprecedented resolution. To verify their software, a realistic simulation of the various signals found in the sky have to be simulated.
EoR, Simulation, SKA, python
The goal is to add realistic Epoch of Reoinisation (EoR) simulations. This includes various radio foregrounds like the Galactic foreground, extragalactic foreground and the 21cm EoR signal. As these simulations are computationally intensive, the simulations have to run in parallel on a supercomputer. Finally, the simulated image of the sky needs to be segmented using a machine-learning algorithm, which detects the weak EoR sources.
The FHNW already started development on its digital twin software called Karabo. This software was used as a basis for the project. In addition, there are already a few python based packages that partially simulate various parts of the sky. Some of the skies are also available as catalogued data from NASA. However, the catalogues need to be transformed into the correct coordinate system and projection.
The simulation of the 21cm EoR signal, the galactic foreground and the synchroton signal have been successfully implemented into the project. The simulation of these signals also runs in parallel to use all the available resources. The segmentation of the EoR regions has also been added, however at this stage, it can only detect the sources on a pure signal without the foreground contaminations.
