Trial Contact Lenses
Multipatient trial contact lenses must meet strict hygiene and documentation standards. Our application digitizes this entire process, ensuring safety, traceability, and full ISO 19979 compliance.
Initial Situation/Problem statement
The Institute of Optometry maintains a large stock of multipatient use trial contact lenses (MUTCL). These lenses are reused across patients during diagnostic examinations, making strict disinfection and documentation procedures essential. Before this project, the cleaning process was recorded manually on paper, resulting in inconsistencies, data gaps, and limited traceability. Additionally, the administrative workload was high, and retrieving historical cleaning information was difficult. To streamline hygiene control and support students during their clinical work, the institute required a digital system to manage lenses and document the entire cleaning process.
Project Goal
The goal was to design and implement a web-based solution that digitizes the management of trial contact lenses. The system enables administrators to register, monitor, and reorder lenses, including their types, geometries, and disinfection methods. Students can document each cleaning step through an intuitive, guided workflow, while the institute benefits from full traceability of lens usage and disinfection cycles in compliance with ISO 19979.
Login - Keycloak
A secure login process is implemented using Keycloak, ensuring that only authorized students and administrators can access the system. All user roles and permissions are centrally managed, supporting a safe and controlled environment.
Workflow
The Student workflow provides a guided, step-by-step process for documenting each cleaning stage. By scanning the QR code on the lens, students are led through the disinfection procedure in accordance with ISO 19979, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
Administration
The Administration Dashboard offers a complete overview of all lenses, their status, and properties. Administrators can register new lenses, edit lens data, manage disinfection types, and reorder lenses that reach the end of their lifecycle.
Developed Solution and its benefit
The resulting solution consists of a web application with two main interfaces:
- Admin Interface: Allows registration, editing, and tracking of all lenses, including their type, geometry, and status. Administrators can reorder out-of-stock lenses, manage disinfection types, and view the complete cleaning history of each lens.
- Student Interface: Provides a streamlined workflow to document each cleaning step via QR code scanning. Each step follows the ISO 19979 standard, ensuring complete and consistent documentation.

A key part of the solution is the use of unique QR codes printed on each lens container. Scanning a code gives instant access to the corresponding lens record, eliminating manual search, reducing errors, and accelerating the workflow. Once opened, users can document the cleaning process and track lens status changes in real time. The admin dashboard provides an overview of all lenses, their status, and their cleaning history, supporting efficient monitoring and stock management.
