Initial situation/problem statement

Currently, remote testing of medical devices at Varian Medical Systems uses open VNC access, which lacks adequate security, control, and traceability. This approach poses significant risks, including unauthorized access and untracked system modifications, which can compromise the integrity and reliability of the testing process.

Project Goal

The (Research and Development) R&D Infrastructure Cockpit provides medical device testers and system administrators at Varian Medical Systems with secure, traceable, and production-equivalent test workstations. Built on a KVM-based remote access system, the R&D Infrastructure Cockpit ensures controlled access, real-time configuration tracking, and seamless integration with existing tools. Unlike basic VNC solutions, our product delivers robust audit trails, enforces compliance, and guarantees test environment reliability, empowering teams with confidence in every test.

Developed Solution and its Benefits

We developed an Access and File-Tracking Solution that authorizes local and remote users, tracks connection times, checks files, and provides an overall view of given test systems.

Secure Remote Access: All remote access is channeled exclusively through an integrated gateway proxy, to prevent unauthorized connections.
Configuration Baseline Management: Establish a "golden" baseline for each test system and track all subsequent modifications against it.
Real-Time Change Tracking: A dedicated service allows to track changes across test systems and ensures that all modifications are logged.
Comprehensive Reporting: Display reports on access activities and configuration changes for compliance and review purposes.
Integration with Existing Tools: Seamlessly connect with Varian's existing calendars and logbooks to streamline workflows.
Central Web Application: A modern web interface for users to manage reservations, access remote sessions, and review system status.
