Public Display System

Edit once, publish everywhere. The Public Display System is a web-based content management solution that enables any staff member at Brot Bistro Bar to keep the restaurant's screens up-to-date and consistent in real time.

Problem Statement

The Brot Bistro Bar's menu display system did not allow cross-display updating. Whenever a dish sold out, a price changed, or a new seasonal item was added, the same edit had to be applied manually on every screen, which made even small changes a tedious task. Only one person on the team knew how to operate the system, which made the work demanding for a single individual. Screens often showed outdated content, and guests regularly had to ask whether what they saw was still available.

Project Goal

The goal of the project was to replace the manual setup with a system that any team member can operate, regardless of role or technical background. Updates should take seconds, and the same content should reach every screen at once.

Content Management

Automated Content Control: Staff members select pre-defined products and menus, and the system handles layout and formatting automatically. A live preview shows the result before changes are published to the screens.

Display Scheduling

Time-Based Control: Playlists can be assigned to specific time slots throughout the day. This allows the system to switch between breakfast, lunch, and dinner content automatically without manual intervention.

Developed Solution and its Benefit

The Brot Public Display System provides the entire team with a single, centralized hub to manage menus, slides, and screens. It is a data-driven ecosystem designed to eliminate manual overhead: updates take only seconds and appear on every display simultaneously, ensuring consistency across the bistro.

  • Centralized Content Management: A single web interface manages all digital content. Changes are reflected on every display at once, eliminating the need to update each screen individually.
  • Web-based & Remote Access: Being a web-based solution, the system can be accessed from any device with an internet connection. This allows management to update content and check display statuses from anywhere, whether on-site or off-site.
  • Accessible to Everyone: The interface is designed for staff without a technical background. Larger buttons, clear flows, and an intuitive layout make daily updates straightforward for chefs, service staff, and managers.
  • Data-Driven: Products are registered once and reused across all slides, menus, and exports. This reduces duplicate work and prevents data errors.
  • Multi-Format Output: The system is not limited to screens; the same data powers printable menu PDFs and Instagram-ready marketing posts.

Development & Partnership

The system was developed in close partnership with the Brot Bistro Bar team over two semesters. This iterative process allowed for alignment of display features with the restaurant's daily operations. Observation of the staff in their work environment ensured that the solution integrates seamlessly into the real-world workflow.

Close Collaboration

Working closely with the team at Brot Bistro Bar shaped this project from start to finish. Their feedback in every sprint review and openness to test early versions shaped the final product.

On-Site Testing

Testing the system in its real environment revealed issues that would not have been visible from the office. Working alongside the staff shaped how every workflow was designed.

«Working with the FHNW student team on our new public display system has been a real pleasure. Communication was professional and solution-oriented throughout, and the team showed great initiative and technical talent. The cloud-based solution is already deployed in our restaurant and has drastically reduced the time needed to manage menu content and Instagram posts, while making it easy to delegate updates to employees. A sincere thank you to everyone involved, and all the best for their careers ahead.»
