The Contact Lenses Catalogue is a web-based database providing Swiss students and optometrists up-to-date specifications and information on optometry products.
Problem Statement
There are countless contact lenses, contact lens care products and eye moisturising drops on the market, all with different properties and compositions. In the past, a catalogue of lenses and care products was developed that is only available in PDF form. However, the catalogue has not been updated since 2015 and its structure needs to be revised to allow easier comparison of products. The problem in teaching optometry students, but also later in clinical practice, is that it is very difficult to gather the necessary professional information to prescribe lenses and care products. Students studying optometry currently have to use the outdated PDF for their studies, leading to inefficient learning. The PDF format also isn't made for real-time updating and deployment.
Project Goal
The project strives to help optometrists and students studying optometry in Switzerland find contact lenses and their supplementary care products by providing an up-to-date, exhaustive, informational and independent online catalogue of products available in Switzerland.
Search Products
Using robust filters and search functionality, lenses and care products can be filtered by multiple categories and search terms.
Update Products
Admins can update the catalogue by uploading an edited Excel sheet and viewing the calculated differences to accept and decline changes to the database.
Administrate Users
Add, remove and update users using the administration section.
What our solution brings to Swiss optometrists
The catalogue will be maintained by the FHNW Institute of Optometry to insure it stays up-to-date. The catalogue will provide Swiss optometrists and students studying optometry a proper resource regarding all facets of contact lenses. The following are features the catalogue will provide:
- an exhaustive, filterable list and detailed description of exchange/individual lenses
- an exhaustive, filterable list and detailed description of lens materials and their care products
- a robust user authentication and user system
- catalogue maintenance through change requests
- user administration to secure access for optometrists and students
Testimonial
«The realisation of the Contact Lenses Catalogue project with the students is very exciting, and it has been a pleasure to watch its development. In teaching at the Institute of Optometry, the Contact Lenses Catalogue will be used to represent the entire product range of contact lenses and contact lens care products on the Swiss market. It will help future optometrists, as well as optometrists in their daily practice, to find the best possible product for their patients.»
