AYLA is a web based platform, that offers students a fun and personalized way to learn, while reducing stress and boosting their academic performance.

AYLA - Amend Your Learning Ability
Problem statement
Many university students face challenges when it comes to self-regulated learning (SRL), which is essential for academic success. Self-regulated learning describes the process by which students monitor and control their cognition, motivation, and behaviour in order to achieve certain goals (source). Traditional learning methods however are not always effective in promoting SRL. To truly enhance students' SRL skills, training must be tailored to their subjective challenges to ensure transfer to everyday learning situations. This is why our project team was tasked by two researchers of the FHNW School of Education to create AYLA, an online platform that is specifically designed to address the SRL challenges of university students. The finished product is needed for a first research pilot to evaluate the effectiveness of the platform.
Project Goal
The primary objective of this project is to convert the researchers' concept into an engaging web-based learning platform. Additionally, the project aims to serve as a proof of concept for the researchers and offer valuable insights into the potential of AYLA in enhancing self-regulated learning (SRL) skills among university students. Hence, the goal encompasses two aspects: developing a product that can be tested by 150 students in a research pilot and creating a comprehensive database to store all pertinent research data, exportable in Excel format.
Choose a Hemisphere
Users begin their learning journey by choosing a Hemisphere, such as Exam Preparation (Prüfungsvorbereitung).
Choose an Ocean
After choosing a Hemisphere users choose an Ocean that leads to a subtopic of exam preparation. In this case Metacognition (Metakognition)
Choose an Island
Now users can choose an Island that leads them to the Activities.
Complete Activities and Levels
Here we see the Activities for level 1 about Setting Goals and Planning (Ziele setzen und Planen). Users can save their answers for every Activity.
Take Quiz
Once the user did all the Activities, the Quiz (Levelabschluss) can be taken. With success, the next level is unlocked. The Quiz consists of a number of different questions including multiple choice, drag and drop, single choice and more.
Look at Scoreboard
Users can look at their achievements on the Scoreboard. The treasure chests symbolize their progress.
Developed Solution and its Benefits
The Ayla Plattform offers a range of features and benefits to help students improve their self-regulated learning skills:
- A placement test is provided to evaluate the student's current knowledge level on SRL, allowing for personalized recommendations on how to use the platform effectively.
- Gamification elements, such as treasure chests and unlocked levels, motivate students to engage in the provided exercises.
- The platform's design takes students on a journey via hemispheres, oceans and islands, guiding them through various SRL training exercises.
- A variety of necessary text fields, upload fields, tables, slide bars, and drag-and-drop fields are included to allow students to work on all exercises effectively.
- The quiz function tests users' progress, with multiple-choice, single-choice, drag-and-drop, and right-wrong questions available.
- A score board offers an overview of the user's progress, with an appealing design.
- Tips, hints, reminders, and videos are provided to ensure high usability.
- The platform collects relevant data during the research pilot, which can be easily evaluated by the researchers to assess the effectiveness of AYLA in promoting self-regulated learning.
