Summary

BetterGardens is a mobile application to revolutionize the use of private gardens for biodiversity. To reform the use of private gardens, BetterGardens helps to distribute knowledge and connect gardeners.

Project goal

The goal of the application BetterGardens is to motivate private garden owners to increase biodiversity in their gardens aswell as to support the management of gardens and communication between different garden owners.

Initial situation

Currently, many public green spaces are part of a biodiversity strategy from the department of environment. In these strategies, most privately owned green spaces are, despite their potential, completely left out. Some gardeners are aware of the problem with declining biodiversity and actively try to counteract it with their own garden. But much like with the tower of babel, without communication between individuals, this has little effect. A successful solution will have people working together and supporting each other, as much more can be achieved that way.

Benefits of your solution

Providing information about various species and habitat elements and the interaction of those to support the knowledge of our community are the main benefits of our solution. Users can register habitat elements, create their own gardens and create linking projects to support certain species and see what others are contribute to biodiversity.

Results

Together with our customer, we implemented and refined the application BetterGardens in an agile environment using the SCRUM framework over the course of two semesters.
As a result, our application has the following set of core functionalities:

• search and learn about various different habitats/habitat elements
• search and learn about various different species
• search and learn about all relations between habitat elements and species
• create and manage your own garden
• map-based visualisation of the contributions to biodiversity
• learn about the main take-aways of the studies made by FiBL
